The perfect centerpiece for mid-range laptops, AMD’s affordable and powerful Ryzen 7000 CPUs, like the ASUS TUF Gaming laptop Advantage Edition and A16, let you enjoy top-tier performance in a lightweight laptop. Of course, in addition to CPU performance, the A16 also boasts long battery life and a large, gorgeous 16-inch 16:10 ratio display. Its sturdy chassis is as strong as a cow, making it a favorite gem among 1080p gamers.
The A16 comes with an AMD Rembrandt Zen3+ (Ryzen 7 7735HS) or AMD Phoenix (Ryzen 9 7940HS) CPU and comes with two display options, FHD+ with a refresh rate of 165 Hz or QHD+ with a refresh rate of 240 Hz. CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS, Memory: 16GB DDR5 / 4800MHz, Graphics: AMD Radeon RX 7600S, Display: 16-inch FHD+ (1920×1200) IPS-level, 165Hz refresh rate, 100% sRGB, 7ms response, FreeSync Premium, Storage: 1TB SSD PCIe 4, Ports: 2x USB-C3.2 Gen2 (both with DisplayPort 1.4, one with 100W PD), 2x USB-A3.2 Gen1, HDMI2.1 port, 3.5mm audio Ports, 1G LAN port, Kensington Lock, Networking: Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), Weight: 4.85 lbs (2.2kg), Dimensions: 13.88 x 9.92 x 0.87 inches, Battery Capacity: 90Whr
The design used in the A16 reflects the mid-range focus of ASUS’s Advantage series of laptops. It doesn’t have too many luxurious extras to catch your eye, such as gorgeous RGB lighting, curves and other exterior designs. Conversely, “returning” legacy features like the non-removable plastic chassis and rigid metal lid are guaranteed in terms of reliability. The A16 chassis has universal dimensions and is lightweight and easy to carry. Although it is slightly smaller than its big brother ROG Strix G18, it is spacious and practical enough. It measures 13.88 x 9.92 x 0.87 inches and weighs only 4.85 pounds, making it a lightweight choice among gaming laptops.
ASUS TUF Gaming laptop A16 well designed
A16 is well designed and looks comfortable and natural. The ultra-thin bezels frame the panel so beautifully, and the well-designed hinge mechanism pops up the display above the lower edge of the laptop. It’s appropriately shaped without losing maturity, the keyboard keys are well-spaced, the backlight is clear and bright, and the trackpad feels comfortable. In addition, a sandstorm color version has been added to the black model, and a matte finish is used to reduce the impact of fingerprint stains on the appearance.
I’ve use a lot of laptops with 4K displays. But I found that some of them were too high-resolution to provide a seamless experience. Compared with these notebooks, the TUF A16 Advantage Edition avoids this problem with a more modest FHD+ display. One of the best features of the A16 is its smooth video playback. I was amazed at how the 165Hz panel presented images without any stuttering. I never saw it skip a beat. Which is difficult to achieve when using a 4K monitor on a daily basis. For webcams, the A16 comes with a 720p HD camera that performs well in terms of image and sound. However, like many gaming laptops, there’s graininess in low-light conditions. And the quality falls a little short of some productivity laptops.
ASUS TUF Gaming laptop A16 Advantage Edition
The TUF A16 Advantage Edition places most of its ports on the left side. Which makes it suitable for right-handed users to use the mouse. But not so convenient for left-handers. While there’s no Thunderbolt 4 port, the device still has multiple USB-A and USB-C ports and an HDMI 2.1 port. Both USB-C ports support DisplayPort 1.4 functionality. And one of the ports also features 100W power output to quickly charge your devices. The A16’s two speakers sound clear and balanced, but the bass isn’t overpowering. It levels off and gets pretty flat in the low frequencies. However, it supports high-resolution audio and Dolby technology, which is close to movie-like in terms of audio.
Our evaluation use the AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS CPU. Which is a 16-core (3-thread) CPU processor based on the AMD Zen8+ microarchitecture. We tested it against a variety of 2022 model gaming laptops (as our 2023 model review program is still in the early stages). It choosing the benchmark model mainly based on mid-range CPU performance. Such as the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 with Ryzen 9 The 6900HX CPU, despite not topping the charts in 2022, performed solidly in some PCWorld reviews.
AMD Radeon RX 7600S GPU
Under the hood, our review unit was equipped with a mid-range AMD Radeon RX 7600S GPU. An AMD RDNA3 architecture design with new compute units that share resources between rendering. AI, and ray tracing and deliver faster, more efficient performance. While we focus primarily on GPU performance when conducting benchmarks, the A16 also features AMD SmartShift technology. The technology delivers optimal performance by intelligently allocating APU and GPU resources. And is similar to Nvidia’s Advanced Optimus technology in powered laptops. It can be see from the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark test results that the A16 is at a medium level of performance in gaming. Other graphics tasks, closely behind the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and Razer Blade15.
PCWorld’s battery test is brief, but the results still show that the 90Whr battery in the A16 can last you up to seven hours of gaming away from an AC outlet. Even if you’re just running lightweight productivity apps, you’ll get more than a full day’s worth of runtime. This is very rare for a gaming laptop. The A16 holds its own against more expensive laptops like the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16. And MSI Katana GF76, especially when it comes to 1080p gaming. While it’s affordable, it doesn’t sacrifice performance or a solid chassis. Therefore, it is a value-for-money gaming laptop option.
