If you turn on HBO Max to watch a series premiere or a hit show just to have a hard time, you’re not alone. HBO’s website sometimes crashes under load, and many people are dealing with buffering issues, app crashes, and various other bugs and issues.
HBO Max’s problems aren’t limited to days when series premieres or new episodes of popular shows air. They can happen anytime and anywhere. HBO Max issues are annoying, but in most cases, they’re pretty easy to fix.

If you’re still unable to stream properly, we recommend restarting your router as the issue is most likely related to your home connection. Unplug your router for a minute, then plug it back in. If you use a mesh Wi-Fi setup like eero, make sure you unplug that too.
At this point, we highly recommend running a Speedtest to ensure your speeds are sufficient to handle streaming HD/SD content. Streaming content from HBO Max requires a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps.
If this doesn’t work, close all applications and shut down the computer. Unplug the router for another minute, plug it back in, and then start the computer again.
If you’re having trouble streaming through the HBO Max app, here are some things you can try.
In most cases this is probably your connection. Likewise, you’ll need a download speed of at least 5 Mbps to stream via the HBO Max app.
The app will adjust the quality of the content you’re watching based on your connection speed. So if it’s slow, you might see lower quality, or in some cases, nothing at all.
Speed test
The first step is to check your connection by running Speed test. If you notice something unusual (or even if you don’t), try restarting your router. If you’re streaming over a cellular connection, you’ll want to move to a better service area if possible.
If this doesn’t help, try restarting the app and/or the device you’re streaming from. You can also try using a wired connection if available. Running an Ethernet cable directly from your router to your Xbox or PlayStation can help increase your network speed.
If your router is old, you may want to consider buying a new one. Newer, faster models can help alleviate these issues.
How to fix HBO Max login issues
If you can’t remember the email address you used to log into HBO Max, HBO recommends that you contact them.If you can’t log in on your computer, try logging in on your phone to make sure it’s not related to your account/subscription. If the login issue is limited to your computer, you can try the following:First, try logging in using a different browser.
So if you’re using Chrome on your Mac , give Safari a try.If this doesn’t work, try clearing your browser’s cookies. Once done, restart your browser and try logging into this again.If this doesn’t help, clear your browser’s cache.
How to fix HBO Max app issues
If you’re having trouble using the HBO Max app on your iPhone, iPad, Android phone or tablet, Xbox, or PlayStation, here’s how to fix most issues.
First, make sure your HBO Max app is up to date. HBO is constantly improving the app and fixing some lingering issues, and there’s a good chance the latest version will fix your issue.
We also recommend installing the latest software updates for your device. For iPhone, this means updating to the latest version of iOS. If you own an Android device, please install the latest version of Android for your device.
If you don’t want to update, or if an issue prevents you from using the latest version, close the app and reopen it. This has worked for us many times in the past. If that fails, restart your phone, tablet, or console.
If this doesn’t work, try reinstalling the app, deleting it from your phone, tablet or console, and downloading it from the appropriate store.
How to fix HBO Max no video issue
If there is sound but no video when you try to watch a show, the problem is most likely related to your Wi-Fi or cellular data speed. If your speed is extremely slow, you may not see anything on the screen.
First, check your connection to make sure it’s fast and stable enough to handle HBO Max content. If your connection check is successful, there are a few other things you can try.
If you can’t see the video on your computer, try closing all applications and restarting. In case you don’t see any images on your phone, tablet or console screen, please restart the app and/or your device.

If you need to reset your HBO Max password, you can request to create a new password. Once requested, a password reset email will appear in your email within a few minutes.

How to Fix HBO Max “Not in Service Area” Issue
If you notice a “Not in Service” message when trying to watch content on this, there may be an issue with your IP address.
It is currently limited to the United States and U.S. territories. It is possible that your IP address has been identified as being outside the United States.
The first thing to do is to turn off your device with it. After shutting down, reset the modem/router. Plug it back in and start your device again.
If you use V or web proxy, you need to try disabling it to make sure your IP address is not blocked.
If it still doesn’t work, you’ll need to call HBO and provide them with your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and your IP address.
